Plants Vocabulary
1)      Photosynthesis:  process that plants use to make their own food
2)     Cell wall:  surrounds the cell membrane and supports the plant cell
3)     Chloroplast:  organelle that contain chlorophyll
4)     Nonvascular plant:  plant that lack specialized conducting tissues and true roots, stems, and leaves
5)     Vascular plant:  plant that has specialized tissues that conduct material from one part of the plant to another
6)     Gymnosperm:  nonflowering seed plant, such as a pine tree
7)     Angiosperm:  flowering plant that produces seeds within a fruit, such as apple trees
8)     Pollen:  tiny granules that contain the male gametophyte of seed plants
9)     Pollination:  transfer of pollen from male to female reproductive structures
10) Xylem:  vascular tissue that transports water
11) Phloem:  vascular tissue that transports food
12) Root:  underground part of a plant that provides water and minerals
13) Stem:    part of a plant that connects the plant’s roots to its leaves and flowers
14) Sepal:  one of the outermost rings of modified leaves that protect the flower bud
15) Petal:  one of the ring or rings of the brightly colored, leaf shaped parts of the flower
16) Stamen:  male reproductive structure of a flower consisting of a filament and anther
17) Pistil:  female reproductive structure of a flower consisting of an ovary, style, and stigma
18) Ovary:  lower part of a pistil that produces eggs in ovules
19) Chlorophyll:  green pigment in a chloroplast that collects sun’s energy
20) Deciduous:  trees that lose all of their leaves around the same time each year
